Dear Ross: A Letter From Caleb Chen

Dear Ross Ulbricht,

Caleb Chen

You brought a little-known economic experiment to the forefront of the world’s hive mind. While many in the community continue to lament the association between the words “Bitcoin” and “Silk Road,” I find it preferable to embrace it. I have heard increasing numbers of regulators and investors in this budding space say something along the lines of – “if you can’t buy drugs with it, it isn’t money.” They say this to justify the next-gen push into enterprise, permissioned, non-Bitcoin blockchain technology. The world has woken up to the fact that the technology behind Bitcoin works for money and more, and now companies like IBM and Microsoft are leading the charge to implement blockchain technology cost saving in everything from insurance to deeds and titles. While some might think that these companies are avoiding Bitcoin because of its Silk Road history, we know better. Enterprise security is compromised by open access and it was unlikely that the biggest companies in the world would ever use Bitcoin’s blockchain at their core.

Where you sit, right now, reading this. You have a forced and intimate understanding of permissioned blocks – you’re only allowed the few to move between. I don’t know how much news makes it to you on the inside. Just rest assured that the War on Drugs is being won, in no small part thanks to you. On the grander scale, the battlefield for centralization versus decentralization is being set. We are moving towards a better tomorrow, bit by bit by Bitcoin – and your sacrifice most certainly jump-started this course. The truth, like the cream, always rises to the top. I have a feeling that history will remember you in a better light once it does.

Sincerely,

Caleb Chen
