Bitcoin Pizza Day’s Sixth Anniversary!

It’s that time of year. The anniversary of the notorious Bitcoin Pizza Day. On May 22, 2010, Laszlo Hanyecz, a developer, paid 10,000 BTC for two pizzas from the Papa John’s franchise. Every year on this date, people celebrate this historic transaction that would cost $4.4 million USD at today’s current rates for 16 slices of pizza.

Bitcoin Pizza Day Celebrated Once Again

This year, scrolling through various social media platforms, the momentous day is being celebrated once again in 2016. Throughout Twitter, the #BitcoinPizzaDay hashtag is in full effect with people remembering the purchase and of course swathes of pizza-related memes. At the time when Laszlo Hanyecz bought the pizzas, the transaction was roughly $20 worth of bitcoins and was completed to test out whether the point of sale could be accomplished. The Florida programmer Laszlo Hanyecz told the New York Times:

“It wasn’t like Bitcoins had any value back then, so the idea of trading them for a pizza was incredibly cool.”

Papa Johns Partners with Ronald McDonald House Charities

Across the world wide web, you can find deals from multiple pizza vendors online who accept BTC. For instance, you can save £5 off Pizza Express gift cards, and Chopcoin.io is holding a pizza day contest that will award the winners with bitcoin. Another cool #BitcoinPizzaDay celebration maintained by the NY Bitcoin Group is a partnership between Papa John’s pizza chain and Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) from the Capital Region. Donors can purchase pizza for RMHC families using bitcoin via Bitpay.

Alongside the pizza day-fiesta, the altcoin community is trying to get in on the action. The Twitter handle MerchantIntegration tweeted out the news today about another interesting aspect of today’s Pizza-related celebration, showing the purchase of Papa John’s pizzas using Ethereum. Cryptocurrency enthusiasts everywhere typically get hyped up about the anniversary of the historic day — this year’s event seems to be just as popular.
