Anonymous Donor Gives 38 Bitcoins to African Water Project

Bitcoin proponents were thrilled to hear that the Water Project recently received an anonymous donation of 38 bitcoins —  worth $23,000 USD at press time. The charity doesn’t know who sent the funds, but they are very grateful, as the money will go towards providing clean water and sanitation facilities to an entire school.

Water Project Receives 38 BTC Donation

The Water Project is a well known charitable organization in the Bitcoin community. Local teams build water wells, dams, and spring protections in Kenya, Uganda and Sierra Leone. The charity got significant attention when BitGive helped them raise funds to build a water well in Western Kenya.

The well gave clean water to the Shisango Girls’ Secondary School and a community of over 500 people. BitGive published a short 3-minute video of how the project made a difference with help from the Bitcoin community.

The group received its largest donation to date on September 13. An anonymous giver sent 38 bitcoins over two transactions during the night.

The Water Project organizers thanked the donor on Reddit, stating:

So we don’t know who you are, but we’re grateful. And so, just in case you hang out here, we want to say thanks! Today you gave enough BTC – totally anonymously – to provide clean, safe water and sanitation facilities to an entire school AND for the monitoring and repair funds to keep it working for years to come.

Bitcoin Community Has Supported 5 Water Project Missions

The Water Project also detailed that the Bitcoin community has funded five projects over the past couple of years. Some of the donations have been anonymous, and others were not. The charity says it’s very grateful for the recent donation, and for all the gifts they have received — no matter their size.

The charity says they are incredibly thankful for having the Bitcoin community on their side and that “every BTC provides clean water.”

Soon, the organization will announce through their Bitcoin Donation Page how they will spend the funds. The Water Project says most they will most likely use the donation for a well water mission in Sierra Leone. The group will work with BitGive’s transparency project to give an auditable account of donations received.

Community Shows That Bitcoin Is a True Humanitarian Currency

When the Bitcoin community heard about the random donation, many expressed their excitement.

One Redditor writes:

38 bitcoin to a charity! Whoever did that, your a top man sir. Sometimes I think bitcoin has been hijacked by the greedy. Kinda nice to know that there still some big bitcoin accounts out there in the hands of charitable people rather than speculative trader types.

The gift of 38 bitcoins is quite the generous donation. No one knows if the donor will reveal themselves, but most of the community and the Water Project organizers know it really doesn’t matter. Anonymous donations such as this one are just one of Bitcoin’s key humanitarian strengths.
